St Mary’s Church in Broughty Ferry – Open Day to showcase recent remodelling works

RDA Architects gave a presentation at St Mary’s Church Broughty Ferry at their Open Day to showcase the remodelling works undertaken.

The presentation discussed how the existing St Mary’s Church internally had an original traditional pew layout, meaning there was no flexibility to be used for any other activities other than worship. Externally, the main and only entrance to the church level had stepped access, meaning there were difficulties with accessibility, and an unsympathetic extension for the lower floor, used as a nursery.

With RDA Architects, St Mary’s Church decided to remove the pews to provide a flexible space for worship and community use, extend on the church level to provide accessible WC and kitchen facilities, and add a ramp to the front street elevation to allow accessible access. This allowed the re-rendering of the existing extension with specialist lime render to be more sympathetic, also incorporating a more inkeeping slate pitched roof and conservation windows to the additional level.

Other alterations were also undertaken, such as adding a glass door, while retaining the decorative timber door, to allow the church to appear open and inviting, and a full redecoration of the church internals, including replastering damp areas, full re-paint, new flooring and radiator covers. Historic elements have been retained such as the chancel.
