Former Bakery, Castle Street
Site Description
The Former Bakery is a derelict structure to the rear of 18-20 Castle Street, Dundee. The site is bounded to the North by the rear of units to High Street, to the East by a retaining wall and St Paul’s Cathedral, to the South by No22 Castle street and a ground floor outshoot to the rear of Nos. 20&24 Castle Street and to the West by a three-storey tenement over ground floor commercial units.
The exact history of the former bakery is unclear however, the description of Listed Building reference LB25020 – 14-18 Even Nos. Castle Street makes reference to the structure being the former bakery of Wallace’s Pie Shop under its Grade C listing.
The former bakery is not visible from public street level and is accessed via a communal pend to the North of No. 20 Castle Street. The pend has historically provided access to the rear courtyard, Former Bakery, tenement above as well as service access to the commercial units including the former St Paul’s Church at No.22 Castle Street (recently converted from public house to residential apartments).
The building has fallen into a state of dilapidation due to lack of repair. Efforts have been made to secure the structure whilst seeking an appropriate and deliverable development outcome, this took the form of removal of the roof, approved in 2008 under Listed Building Consent 08/00101/LBC, the works associated with this including capping the wall heads was under taken in Autumn 2008.
The special architectural and historic interest of the building is recognised within its statutory listing understatement of special interest as a derelict building within the yard.
